Are rappers overrated?

Well, I’m not sure the necessary point of music is to be profound. Most music I know of isn’t anything I’d consider “profound”, really. I know you have your Dylans and Springsteens, but by and large I don’t necessary gain any insight from music. It doesn’t need to be profound, or intricate, or only performed through certain mediums…. it’s art. You don’t have to like it or think it’s high-quality, but it’s somebody’s art just the same. So a song — in this case a rap song — not being profound isn’t a disqualifying element towards whether or not a song is enjoyable. What are some songs you consider to be profound?

Rap is more about rhythmic wordplay. It’s not necessarily the insightfulness of the lyrics but the intricacy of the words, the similes, the metaphors, the double-entendres, rhyme scheme, and of course the always-on-beat delivery of said words with no slip-ups.

Big Daddy Kane is for all intents and purposes an “old school” rapper. I know younger people today call 90s old school, but that ain’t real old school. REAL old school is from the early to mid-80s. Kane was part of that second wave of MCs that, relative to what we had seen up to that point, were advancing the style of the genre, with more clever lyrics and a smoother delivery compared to the choppy cadence of the early and mid 80s. (Think Run DMC) So, he’s more of a legacy guy, not someone who will wow you compared to guys over thirty years past his heyday.

Some more modern guys can really spit. It may or may not be profound to some people’s liking. A lot of it is the aforementioned flow and metaphors, etc. Other stuff is just colorful depiction of a lifestyle, and in the case of gangsta rap, or maybe we call it “coke rap” these days, some of it is pretty dark and/or graphically violent…. but the best of it is still excellent, in my opinion. Some other rap is just kind of catchy, easily consumable music, and that’s all fair too, as much as we poke fun at it sometimes. It’s all valid. Somebody likes it, and that’s awesome. As long as people are smiling and dancing in their bedrooms when no one’s watching, mission accomplished👍

Most Rap bores me. I do appreciate the talent of people who can rapidly spit fire, but even that is not something I will listen to regularly.
