I haven't played Quake 2 to much to answer but I would say its close to doom yes. Depends on the control method though and modernity of the source port.
Vertical autoaim and keyboard only
I can't agree here. Quake feels more "realistic" in its 3D implementation.
Its game play is very much like Doom to me.
I play with vertical autoaim. Gameplay turns into playing Doom.
Except you can't go faster when you strafe right or left and move forwards or backward at the same time. And also you can jump.
Plus you can go under sea
I play with keyboard only
I guess that's one way to play it. I used only the keyboard with Doom / Doom2 / clones, and switched to keyboard (walk + strafe) and mouse (aiming + direction) from Quake on.
I play with keyboard only since I was a kid. I developed skill in keyboard only.
Quake has vertical autoaim too. I play Quake with keyboard only.
All I play is old school fps games
I finished 3 episodes of Doom and Doom 2 on Nightmare
I came to map 6 in Doom Episode 4 on Nightmare
I agree, it is like doom.
