Was their band or album that shaped your musical tastes going forward to now?

As Black Sabbath prepares for what’s being billed as their final performance on July 5 in Birmingham, I was thinking about music that changed the way I heard music. My moment was when I was 8, and I heard Black Sabbath's “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” album. That changed my musical journey forever.

Hmm…. probably a few over the years.

I had what was essentially a Beach Boys greatest hits album when I was really young, and I think that made me love music broadly, and I think I also like harmonizing. Tough to really credit them with much going forward though, because they were 20 year veterans already, and a relic of the past, and nothing after that was really like them.

I had Guns N Roses “Appetite For Destruction” in I think fourth grade, and I played that like crazy. Other than music videos, that was really the foundation for anything in the lane of rock.

On the rap front: Dr Dre’s “The Chronic” in 1992, and Mobb Deep’s “Tha Infamous” in 1994 really re-shaped my standards and expectations. From that period on, I knew I wanted my rap to lyrically depict graphic violence and be set to either gritty New York boom-bap beats, or hypnotically melodic West Coast G-Funk instrumentals.

Rock music was reset by stuff like Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and “Siamese Dream” by Smashing Pumpkins in the early 90s. All of that was riding sidecar to the 90s rap music though.

In the 00s (and I’ll cheat backwards into the late 90s), definitely “Enema Of The State” by Blink-182. Blink is just one of those bands that I’d occasionally hear a single from them before they were a household name, and I’d just be enamored with it, kind of in the same way as The Beach Boys grabbed me as a kid. Like just an epiphany-like moment where you say to yourself “WHOA…. this is the sound I didn’t even know I was looking for, and it for some reason just puzzle-piece fits with my soul.” And I really wish that wasn’t poppy music that’s up the alley of 15 year old girls in 1966 or 1998, but it is what it is😂

Then I guess maybe the last time I got anything taste-shifting would be 2003 with The Diplomats’ “Diplomatic Immunity” and, to a little lesser degree, Kanye West’s “The College Dropout.” The big development there was the advent of the pitched-up 70s/80s soul/R&B sample in hip-hop instrumentals.

And by now, probably hundreds of beats have been made using that same formula, and I like a whole lot of them. One of my favorite groups today, Griselda, still raps over a lot of beats derived from that. But The Diplomats were the soundtrack of my 00s, because they had those types of beats, from Just Blaze, and brought more of the street shit than Kanye did lyrically…

Everything after that….”albums” are unfortunately not the same as they used to be, oftentimes, to be listened to and appreciated in their entirety.

Deep Purple - Made in Japan freed me from ABBA and the Beatles when I was 14 or so. It was a step stone ''only'', but one that shaped me.

So when it comes to bands Iron maiden definitely got me into metal while nightwish defined my taste further I would say. Because Iron maiden is oldern than me, I kinda got most of their albums at the same time. Nightwish is similar as when I started hearing them, they already had an impressive discography. I would say phantom of the opera in century child is what instantly hooked me.

So I'm what I call polyjamerous ie. I like all different types of music but not all songs of any one genre of music and I choose the music I listen to depending on how I want to feel at the time of choosing it. People I know or work with well most everyone finds it difficult to understand but for me I find it difficult to understand that a person could only like one genre of music especially these days when there is so many blends/collaborations/version of pretty much every song

Not sure that the album I'm about to share is exactly something that shaped my tastes as they change all the time as I'm introduced to all different types of music, but it has opened up other music to people that I have shared it with that they wouldn't have ever given a chance otherwise.

The Chemical Brothers - Come with us... I bought this album one day not knowing anything about them, the album just called to me after seeing it when I picked it up believe it or not in the metal/punk section like as if someone had just put it there for me to find. Don't get me wrong I like electronic music but I would never have found this at the time unless it was where it was at the time.

For me this album is just something that has good energy and when you listen to it in full and get to the end you just feel like you have been on a journey and want to play it again.

I take it you are streaming the concert as well today😊 another reason to party 😊 I went to Ozzfest every year back in the day, so I am streaming it and having friends over to watch it , The second o heard Black Sabbath and Ozzy when I was a young kid as well , I was blown away and be a fan since , but the band that truly shaped me was Rush when I was 11 years old and I started playing bass , my older cousin introduced me to Rush and took me to their concert to see Geddy Lee play bass , not realizing the whole band were talented Gods on instruments , so Rush has always been my favorite band off all time , but I love other Music and bands that o enjoy as well , and Black Sabbath and Ozzy is definitely on the list 😊

Waaaay back when, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, et al, opened my mind to better music than The Beatles or Elvis. Then groups like Rush, Spock's Beard, Parallel or 90 Degrees, Porcupine Tree, et al, helped refine my tastes. Currently it's The Warning, Freeze The Fall and Plush who have captivated and re-energized my taste in rock.

Mdfmk. I never really knew music like this existed except nin. KMFDM had an album after their break up called mdfmk. They called themselves mdfmk for that one album then went back to KMFDM. I listened to it so much it melted in my CD player.
