The film is set just before the Nazi Party takes control of Germany, and club's like the Kat Klub are shut down.

People like Sally Bowles who chose to remain in Germany, the outcome is grim, at best they lose their means of escape, and at worst could sadly share the unfortunate fate that befell many during that harrowing time.
