Gordon Lightfoot is one of my favorite performers. I saw him live a few years ago. It was the first real date I went on with my wife. This is my favorite song by him.

    https://www.youtube.com/embed/bWC4-haeE-k

The last time I saw her face

Her eyes were bathed in starlight and she walked alone

The last time she kissed my cheek

Her lips were like the wilted leaves

    Upon the autumn covered hills

    Resting on the frozen ground

The seeds of love lie cold and still

    Beneath a battered marking stone

    It lies forgotten

I liked his music and he was a great song writer, but I never got that into him or bought any of his albums. It just wasn't the kind of music I liked to listen to.
When some of my peers in high school were listening to stuff like that, I was into rock.

But I'm very familiar with some of his songs and love them.

I can remember being in Montreal with my ex girlfriend and we are walking around and this song is blaring from some store we walked past. This is like a snapshot in my brain.

@exitseven When I was in high school, I had friends that had a typical garage band, they were decent but not great lol However, they did a great job playing and singing that song and I really grew to like it. I have it my my playlist.

  • I do enjoy Gordon Lightfoot’s music 🎶

His storytelling feels a bit like a long, slow-cooked meal: simple on the surface, deep in flavor underneath. “If You Could Read My Mind” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” always remind me of quiet dinners alone, cooking pasta or ramen and letting the lyrics simmer in the background. Timeless, comforting, very honest music.

"Sundown" is my favorite even though, frankly, it's a sick song if you know the background of it.

From Google AI Overview to this query:
what is the story behind the gordon lightfoot song sundown
      ==========
Gordon Lightfoot’s 1974 hit "Sundown" was inspired by his tumultuous"dangerous" relationship with backup singer and girlfriend Cathy Smith. Written while she was out drinking and he was working at home, the song captures feelings of suspicion, jealousy, and fear that another man was "creeping 'round my back stair".

      The Story and Context
      * The Muse: The song is widely known to be about Cathy Evelyn Smith, a woman with whom Lightfoot had a volatile, passionate relationship.
      * Inspiration: In a Reddit AMA, Lightfoot explained he was at home working on his album while his girlfriend was out drinking at bars. He expressed"I was hoping that no one else would get their hands on her, because she was pretty good lookin'!".
      * Meaning: It is a song about jealousy, insecurity, and the "hard-loving" nature of his partner.
      * The "Sundown" Threat: The lyrics "Sundown, you better take care if I find you've been creepin' 'round my back stairs" are interpreted as a direct warning to potential rivals.
      * Recording Timing: The song was written in the evening just as the sun was setting on a farm he was renting.
      * Cathy Smith Background: Notably, Cathy Smith later became infamously known for her role in the 1982 overdose death of comedian John Belushi.

Is he still with us? I remember my mom spinning his records in the 70's. He had a couple catchy tunes, but I wouldn't call myself a fan by any means.
