I think people only hate on Nickleback because it's basically a meme, at this point.

My real question is: if everyone supposedly hates them so much, then how did they get so popular? I don't think people hate them as much as they claim to. I think they have a lot of closet fans.

I've always liked their music, and I've never understood why people don't. If it's not your style, no biggie, but they don't deserve the hate.
