How do you feel about spiritually inconsistent sequels?

I’m watching “House: the Second Story”. I expect that reference to fall somewhat flat since most people probably didn’t even see “House” (1985), let alone the sequel i’m watching now.
The first movie was a horror movie and pretty legitimate in that regard. Although it didn’t age well. Old movies heavy in practical special effects rarely do. But it’s still fun and i can overlook a lot for the sake of nostalgia.
However, the sequel is very comical. It gives me “Weekend at Bernie’s” vibes, though it precedes that movie by about five years.
Now don’t get me wrong. I enjoy “House: the Second Story” for very different reasons that i enjoyed the original. It’s just not the same story at all and it doesn’t carry on the spirit of the original in any meaningful way.
Has another sequel, good or bad, ever caught you off guard by being spiritually inconsistent with the original? If so, did you end up enjoying it, or was it a disappointment?

I own both those movies on Fandango funny enough and haven't thought about them in a long while. Good point about the tonal shift in those though. I think I feel the same way about Evil Dead 1 compared to 2 and Army of darkness. I mean, still the same MC but it just became sillier.

Good point! I forgot about that one. I was racking my brain trying to think of another example besides “Halloween: Season of the Witch”. They really ramped up the camp in “Army of Darkness”, which i recently watched and this question didn’t even occur to me then. Maybe because i didn’t watch all three in order. I kind of think of the third as its own movie. Same with “Halloween”. I own the third movie, but i never watch it with any of the Michael Myers “Halloween” movies.
I feel like “Ash vs the Evil Dead” continued that extra campy “Army of Darkness” vibe, but now i have a reason to rewatch the series and compare & contrast. 😂😂

Omg Halloween: Season of the witch i completely phased out on because it was so bad lol

Im also gonna give a slight nod to Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Sure it still had Freddy and the general theme but it went from being a straight horror film to being campy as well with the dream warriors which just led to progressively worse campiness. Not that part 2 was great or anything, but it tried to stay consistent at least.

Freddy did get pretty campy. That’s a big part of why i actually enjoyed the remake. They went dark.
Honestly, the one Freddy movie that i watch more than all the others is “Freddy vs Jason”, and i occasionally bemoan the fact that that didn’t become a recurring theme, horror supervillain slugfests. There’s so much potential there!
