What actually makes a music festival truly great for fans?

Those attending. If they end up being assholes, it ruins the whole show for everyone. I went to Lollapalooza and it was a pretty cool gig, for the most part, until Primus started playing, "Mud". As soon as they did, everyone in the grassy areas started ripping up chunks of the sod and throwing them in the air! Not a good idea for me, being allergic to the dust that filled the air a moment later!! Les stopped the show and told everyone to stop that or they'd stop playing!
At Woodstock, which I'm listening to right now for the anniversary, they had half a million people there to see the show and, other than 2 or 3 accidental deaths, a bunch of assholes that refused to come down off the towers and a few minor debates about standing up while those behind were sitting and couldn't see, the whole show went off without any problems!! Fast forward to one of the redux's in the `90's and you had the crowd burning the place down, causing fights and riots and at least one girl got raped!! Some friends of mine played that gig and weren't very pleased with it!!
