At the holiday party for a job I had at a bar about 15-20 years ago, I was in a room full of co-workers, and my lady was there as my +1.

We were all drinking and talking in a big circle, and somehow it came up that I was funny. It was probably one of the waitresses, and whoever it was was telling my girlfriend that I was the funniest person there, “oh my god, Steve is SO funny”, all that. A bunch of other people chimed in and agreed.

Without even batting an eyelash, my lady replies, dead-ass serious, “REALLY? I mean, don’t get me wrong…I think Steve is very funny. I just feel like he’s overrated.”

They were all like “uhhhh….”, and didn’t know how to respond. I just busted out laughing, like “Oh my god, I love this woman so fuckin’ much”😂😂😂

I feel like that’s accurate: pretty funny, but overrated, lmao. But I also think my best stuff goes unappreciated, and then the things I say where I immediately am like “Oof…. maybe shouldn’t have said that; that was like Level 2 comedy, I have better stuff than that”; THAT’LL be the joke that brings the house down. And that’s when I’m just broadly questioning human intelligence, lmao.

I get the “you should do stand-up” a lot, but those are usually the people rolling on the floor at one of my warm-up pitches🙄😂 I have a buddy who’s pretty funny, he’s been going to open mic nights at a comedy club, and he’s sent me the feeds of his “tight 5”….. not good, lmao. He’s sent me some of his joke material…also not great. He’s like me; we’re “funny story” guys. We can tell a funny anecdote…but I don’t necessarily think it translates to a stage and a crowd of strangers. I think we’re ENJOYABLE, but not funny in the strictest sense of the word. My point is: comedy is hard, haha.

I can talk shit in sports, I guess I can be kind of funny in that. But that’s also mean-spirited, and more bullying than being funny, lmao. But I can come up with quick zingers in the moment. Like there was a guy trying to play tough guy in one of my beer league hockey games. We were in front of my team’s bench, he’s doing the “come on, I’m right here!” routine. He was overweight, so in the right break in conversation I said “Buddy, if you’re trying to scare me, all you have to do is cut in front of me in the buffet line”, and my whole team erupted in laughter. Fatality, lmfao.

But just in everyday life, I guess I have a lot of class clown energy, I’m fun, I joke a lot. I’m quick with a joke, I guess you’d say. So by that standard, I’d say I’m very everyday-funny. But if we’re talking like “funny” like prime Dave Chappelle or Bill Burr or Shane Gillis or something…. I can’t hang. Some people are just so almost-automatically funny, just like a reflex, and their first thought will just knock you out of your chair.

If I had to rate myself, maybe a…**checks to make sure no annoying ass little kids are around**…6-7. A small town 8 at best😝

My 1/2 brother was a professional stand up comedian for 17 years and I used to make him laugh.😂 😂

We'd be talking and he would start writing ✍🏼 down things that I would say and use the material in his show. He even did the USO tours.

If I flatter myself, I’d say maybe a 2. I think zero is more accurate. When people do laugh at my jokes, it takes a second for it to sink in that I actually got them to laugh. If I’m with someone that understands my dry humor, I can get a few more laughs.

@wallyworld12 Well, it's like this, ya see. I've been collecting break-in records since 1969 and now have the largest collection of them in the world. Over 1200.
I'd been wanting to do my own break-in for quite some time but could never come up with a subject to make it about. In 1996, my neighbor decided to do one of his own on the O. J. Simpson trial so, rather than steal his thunder, I started writing a few jokes for him to use but he decided to do it all himself. Well, I didn't want these jokes to go to waste so, I decided to do my own break-in on it and started writing more jokes. By the time I was done, the whole thing was 13:00 long!! The pressing plant said, the most they could fit on a 7" was about 4.5 minutes but, since most of this was talking, they could squeeze in a bit more time. So, I had to edit it way down to 9:48. What I SHOULD''VE done was left it as it was and had them press it on a 10" record!
Well, this was Ron's first break-in record. He did 3 of them. The third was about Bill Clinton.

@wallyworld12 Well, there was a lot of good material in that missing 4:00. It was also a lot of work splicing all that tape together.
I sure hope so!! I recorded it straight to open reel so, if that reel is gone then, I don't have it. I lost a TON of stuff 6 years ago when my house was taken away from me! Including a break-in I did back in `73 and a couple hundred reels of tape I spent months recording meticulously!! Over 2000 records, most of which I never even got the chance to listen to or catalogue!! And probably a million dollars worth of collectibles and stereo gear and other furniture, too!!

It's more or less taking material and sometimes adapting it to the situation. Sometimes you gotta tweak it a bit. If you gave me a situation i could probably come up with a wisecrack.

I'm just trying to clown them because that's what friends do affectionately. So in actuality i'm just trying to ridicule them in a playful way. So in a way you could say clapping back helps. Like any comedian, any comedy show the headliner comes in later after the crowd is warmed up. You make a few cracks and from there the crowd feeds you. If the crowd ain't feeding you then you're dying. Usually the guy that's losing doesn't want to keep going.
I had a boss i used to do this to all the time. He flat out told me he didn't want to challenge me because i would demolish him with how quickly i'd retort.
Funny is a matter of opinion. A lot of time it's just about perception. Like at one time Jim Carrey was funny. At one time him bending over and talking out of his butt cheeks might have been deemed funny. But there's only so much you can do with that. Jim Carrey did funny stuff, funny characters. But he's probably a poor joke writer. And he's almost a senior citizen now. That physical comedy isn't going to cut it anymore. People don't percieve Jim as funny anymore, ergo he's not. But i'm sure he's still got the same chops.
