If you make sure you pronounce to T in "Often", why do you never pronounce it in hasten, listen or fasten?

I don't know. I tend to speak in sentences rather than ponder the pronunciation of each word. I do often get asked to repeat myself.

I don’t pronounce the T in often. I think it sounds stuck up.

Good. Because, you're not supposed to. It's a silent T, just like how the P is silent in psych or ptomaine.

It might be a regional accent. Like New England or old New York.

That one's not exactly silent. I was also gonna include, tsunami but, the t IS pronounced. Pterodactyl might be a good one.
Then there's this word but, it doesn't really fit under this umbrella: ghoeti.

And on that composer, he has a cool name and the t is silent it's just such a magical word, or name, that one is privey to hearing the silent part.

You're not supposed to but it seems like it's all the rage, these days, to pronounce it in "often", just like it seems to be all the rage to start nearly every sentence with, "so" or, "I mean". How can you say either if you haven't said anything, yet?
