How do you understand the line "when everything is meant to be broken, I just want you to know who I am" from the song Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls?

Well Seth was an Angel who fell in love with Meg Ryan's character who he was supposed to bring comfort to in her time of distress. He keeps appearing to her and she takes an interest in him so finally he decides to fall and become mortal to spend a human life with her. And ***spoiler alert*** as fate would have it she is killed shortly after in a freak bike accident. And Seth has to spend his human life without her now.

I think it was a love story. But the line in the song highlights how flawed and broken human love is. And "i just want you to know who i am". Means "to really see me". Not who you think i am. I can bare the rejection if you see me and are not interested but i just want you know who i really am. Not just who you percieve me to be. And it fits the movie. Because Seth is forced to keeps the fact that he's an Angel under wraps.

This song had special significance to me 28 years ago regsrding a particular woman when i was 22, young, and still believed purely in romantic love.🤣 Oh, young foolish me.

the actual line is "when everything's MADE to be broken"

it didn't only refer to current manufacturing and low quality products that expire by default even... lol

it also refers to bonds, relationships and love... being fragile

but in spite of that... he wants to be genuine about it and with her

To me, it means when life feels temporary, chaotic, or like everything is falling apart, the one thing that matters is being truly known by someone.

It’s basically: “Even if everything else falls apart, please see the real me and understand who I am.” ❤️

That’s what makes Iris so emotionally powerful—it’s less about romance itself and more about wanting to be completely seen and accepted.

when everything is *MADE* to be broken not meant.

Whenever you buy and commercial goods from your washing machine to your tv to your car there is a built in expiry date.

That line hits so hard 💔. “When everything is meant to be broken” feels like an acceptance that nothing lasts forever… relationships, bodies, even dreams. In a world where everything falls apart, “I just want you to know who I am” means the only thing that truly matters is being seen and understood by someone on a deep, honest, almost soul-level, even if it’s temporary. 🌙

I would have to assume it points to the universal loneliness of the human condition. I have never actually heard the song.

[KostasKouvalis]

I can't answer now, that I know what the line is

No, not really
