You should ask them yourself if you feel ready for it.
Apparently it's still on your mind so it might good to ask them if you can/if you think they would answer you in a respectful way.

If not, well, there can be a lot of reasons. Maybe it was like they said and they tried to support you. Maybe they feared other children could give you a hart time because of it. And so on.
I just want to believe they said it with good intentions.
