If your wealthy mother conditioned you from a young age to believe you should give her money in the future, would you resent her in adulthood?

After years of conditioning mentioned above, my mother in law asked my husband to pay off their mortgage, even though they live in an incredibly nice property and my husband and i don't yet own and had just had a baby. My husband wanted to do it initially and i had to explain why she was so bad to do this. by the way she also spends lots on clothes and plastic surgery and drives a BMW. We have nothing of the sort. He now says it was wrong of her to ask him and to condition him in that way, and he said he won't respond to requests for money in the future. But I have this feeling that a man can never fully release himself from the hold his mother has over him and that he may be susceptible to it again in the future if she starts pleading poverty again. My husband is a very nice man and feels a sense of guilt as he is the only child. She is a snake exploiting it. What do you think?
