These are some interesting reads to get an idea of the world she grew up in. You can readup on her father and mother (as they have them portrayed). Both parents were highly educated.

Notably, very little written about how much her father was in her life. Was she raised primarily, without her father? Her mother was a strong influence. An amazing mix of Indian/Black in the 1960s! Most indian parents are very controlling of their daughters. Was her mother a rebel and Kamala reall is tough? hummm...

p. s. she has a little sister, we hear nothing really about her family.
