1 yPlaying organized team sports. I played semi-pro football until my early 30s, and that was awesome, and certainly was a team sport…. I don’t know how organized we always were though😅 VERY spotty attendance at practices, 12 running backs and 2 linemen show up, so you can’t really simulate real situations. We’d be using orange cones to simulate where a player WOULD be if they were present🤦♂️😂 And now I play beer league hockey, also a team sport, but no coaches, no practices, and spotty attendance even for games.
It’s all fun and gets the competitive juices flowing, but nothing replicates the REAL sports experience you get as a kid. That’s the only time coaches and players really organize and commit to the program, unless you’re one of the few to play college sports, or very rare few to play professionally. And even better, half of the time you’re at it you don’t even realize that you suck, and you legitimately dream of higher levels😂
Little League baseball was AWESOME. Summer vacation, play outside all day, then late afternoon I’d get my glove and cleats, put on my uniform if necessary, and hop on my bike and ride down to the baseball field for either practice or a game, probably 5 of 7 days per week. Just playing ball with/against my buddies from school on a nice summer day, tryna hit some dingers and hopefully make the all-star team so I’d get a special hat for the all-star game that I could peacock around the middle school with, lmao. I miss buying either Bubble Tape or Big League Chew gum, and pretending it was tobacco, like the pros would chew, haha. The Bubble Tape was in a circular canister that looked just like a can of dip in the back pocket of your baseball pants, lmao. But DON’T wear it for an at-bat, you don’t want to slide on it😖😖😖 But yeah, Little League was THE SHIT.
Even better was Pop Warner football. I loved football before I even started playing. We’d drive by the practices when I was little, and I’d see the older kids out there, full pads, hitting, doing jumping jacks…. that was the BEST five seconds, every time. I just knew I wanted to do that, more than anything. Finally being old enough, I still remember the first day, getting fitted for pads, strapping up for the first time, the smell of the grass, everything. This is probably 1988, but I’ll just always remember that moment and feeling. Practicing three times a week and a game on Sundays, the first road trip to the “weigh-in” to confirm our size-based eligibility, playing those games, sometimes having to be driven to another city or town for it, full crowd of parents (because they all had to drive us there lmao), cheerleaders, referees, getting your name called on the PA system if you made a play…. it all meant so much. It felt like it mattered, it dominated my thoughts all season long, and I got to play every other day.
Then high school ball was an even further elevation, baseball and football alike. I went to a private school to play Division 1 (saw what they charge now…. NO chance my folks could’ve afforded it, even with my work-study discount for working the cafeteria snack bar, lmao) Getting coached a little more closely and in more advanced detail, seeing your team in the state rankings in the newspaper (started my senior football season ranked #1 pre-season! Don’t ask what happened next😒😭😂), earning a letter and getting a letterman jacket, peacocking around the mall in said letterman jacket trying to impress girls😂, LONG road trips for games, having a locker room was an added element and the scene of many memories, wearing your jersey to school on game days, you and the proud few who represent the school and the student body on the field, just being “different” than everyone else…. there’s nothing like that feeling, however inflated it probably was in our own minds, haha. I really miss that.
And then just casually playing sports around the neighborhood. Football in the street, street hockey, basketball, baseball, even playing Relievio with the whole neighborhood at night…. i was just always active, always running around, always playing a game of some kind. That was everything.
I’m actually very fortunate to be in a spot right now where I’m free to pour myself into hockey right now, playing a few nights a week, and also practicing at public skating sessions during the day, also a few days a week, for years now. No adults get to play this much, haha.
But even so, it’s just not the same as being young, with nothing but seemingly endless energy time, with a gang of others in the same boat. I can’t get a 7 vs 7 game of football going nowadays, at 45…. are you kidding me?😂 But I could do that when I was a kid, with just a few phone calls. That was such a great time of life to be in for that kind of thing.

I miss not having stress. Actually I miss not even knowing what stress was lol. I miss getting up and meeting up with friends and having absolutely no plans but always just finding something to do. We had video games but only played them on rainy days or in the winter when our snow clothes were wet from snow. As soon as they were dry we’d be back outside.

Probably the whole day. I miss everything being new and fresh and time feeling slow and like it would last for ever :) Also life was a bit simpler and slower because technology hadn't taken over yet. People were outside more read more books and stuff.

Anonymous(30-35)1 yHonestly, when I hit puberty, I hit it hard. I tried all kinds of crazy things exploring what felt good. The one I miss most is running through the woods wearing just sneakers. I wasn't aware of anyone knowing I was there. If they did no one let on.
10 ReplyThe simplest answer was the Freedom to be me and explore and have fun.
Adulting Sucks for the most part. Depending on your career choices and the BS / PC crap that is now common place has ruined it.
Hopefully as we are getting truth and answers and seeing all the false things and pretenses we can go back to simply living life for ones self and enjoy it!

1 yMy childhood kinda sucked. I didn't know much of anything, I wanted to do everything and nobody seemed to want to help me.
That said, sometimes I miss being small enough to ride a laundry basket down the stairs 😂
