My high school so-called popular kids consisted of a few bullies. They mostly attracted spineless wannabees who desperately wanted acceptance. They were vulgar, rude, and snobby.
They weren't special, at all. Drive 1hr in any direction and drop them off and they would have been universally reviled.
College was different. The popular people tended to be charismatic, charming, smart, good looking, etc... and admired by their peers.
Looks, outgoing, who they hung out with, etc.
They got there clicks of rich kids they hangout with and they have cars and why some on thr other hand a good at sports or other activities that made them standout
