Which animal would you be most afraid to run into in the wild?

I'd be most afraid to run into a polar bear. Because if you're close enough that you can see them, odds are they've already caught your scent and locked onto you. From there, they'll just keep getting closer and once they're close enough that you lose your cool and flee, the bear will just run you down and kill you.

I've never got the "lay down" logic. OK you're no longer a threat but you're still a tasty meal. It'd be interesting to see how much it actually improves survival rates.

Fun fact. American bears were virtually vegan until European settlers arrived. Easy to catch domestic animals, remains from hunting, food scraps etc gave them a taste for meat.

I'd agree with you on the polar best. They're one of the few animals that actively hunt humans and never turn down an easy meal.

I have read that the best last chance of defense would be to ram your fist into the mouth of the bear, because they had a very strong gag reflex? 🤷‍♂️

Grizzly bears will hunt people, too. They will track you for miles and then flank you as you're moving forward and attack from the side

Appearance is deceptive. A grizzly bear attack may look scarier but that's intentional. A grizzly bear is going to see you as a threat/intruder so it will try to make itself look as big and scary as possible. If you lay down, it won't see you as a threat anymore and will leave you alone.

Meanwhile, a polar bear will see you as food so it won't show any sign of aggression (i. e. make itself look intimidating) as it approaches you. But once it catches you, it's going to kill you.
