Hi all! Me and my fiancé are going on vacation and I asked our normal pet sitter (who is also my friend) to petsit. He said yes, and I offered to pay him $300 to check on them 3 times while I was away.
first time to get the key, he rescheduled- so I was like ok no big deal. And he told me another day that would work. I am able to work remote, but should have been in the office the day he said he could come over. But for my pets and guaranteeing a good pet sitter- I decided to risk it.
so the day he was supposed to come over he told me he would have to be later because he was doing tasks for a friend and laundry and needed to schedule the key pickup and instructions around a date he had for that night.
he was making me feel like it was a huge inconvenience- so I asked a another friend who enthusiastically agreed. I told the original friend he was no longer needed for pet sitting.
then he drops the bombshell on me that he was depending on that money and that he just lost his job. This really pissed me off because he said he could only come during the day to pick up the keys. So he inconvenienced me, got me in trouble at work- and didn’t show up. I explained to him that he was being flakey and I need someone I can depend on to look after my pets.
then he said he didn’t want to talk for the foreseeable future.
am I the jerk?

You are not the jerk. Your primary responsibility is the safety and well-being of your pets, and your friend's behavior showed he was not a reliable choice for that responsibility.
Since he has stated he doesn't want to talk for the foreseeable future, it may be best to give him space. Job loss can cause significant emotional turmoil and a bruised ego. His reaction likely stems from the stress of his situation rather than a fair assessment of your actions.
Good luck.
Thank you! I was hoping I wasn’t the jerk in this situation.
I too lost a job last year and I understand the stress. But his stress and inability to be reliable doesn’t paint a good picture for watching my babies.
You did the right thing, with pets involved you definitely need them to guarantee to get tethered for them
Thank you!
