Sometimes people form an impression of us and then get surprised when they learn something unexpected… and sometimes their reaction can be pretty funny.

What’s something about you that surprises your friends when they find out?

For me, people are usually surprised when they find out I actually enjoy going places alone. 😅 My friends get mad that I didn’t invite them.

I even promised myself a solo visit to the beach next summer. ✨

Sigh, my military background that began the day I was born. My father was career Air Force. I went to the nations oldest private military university. I was a career Army officer in a very uncommon elite role for 15 years.

I get all sorts of strange reactions when I tell anyone anything about it. So I try to avoid that subject like the plague. No, I don't suffer from PTSD or any other trauma. I'm fine thank you. No, it doesn't bother talking about my past at all. It was a job. It's just tedious trying to explain what is an utterly alien existence to most suburbanites who have preconceived notions based on Hollywood but have never actually met someone like me. I'm a novelty for them. They tend to romanticize it. Women can get infatuated with the idea of it and focus all their attention on me. Husbands and boyfriends can get jealous and act like assholes towards me. Some people don't believe me.

And if I confide in one person in a social group, they will inevitably tell another person or several other people. And then I'm being introduced to every new person in that group by my background from years ago. And I have to go through the explanations all over again. And they still don't understand.

Hence why I try to avoid it like the plague.

That I liked to play dungeons and dragons. I love basketball. And I wear that fact on my sleeve. I don't consider myself an "athlete" (I'm not) I'm just big and passionate about basketball (and the Chicago Bulls). But apparently they did. So when one of them found out I played D&D he gave me the craziest look and I said to him "what's wrong"? And he said, "I thought you were a jock". And that just made me laugh. And I said, "I'm not anything but me." It boggles my mind that anyone would mistake me for an athlete because I'm about as graceful as a giraffe on roller skates.🤣 I just love to play and I don't suck at it.

Often it’s something that contrasts with the image people have of me like a hidden skill, an unusual hobby, or a side of my personality that doesn’t come up in everyday interactions.

Surprising friends usually happens when expectations meet unexpected reality, and it’s often a fun or eye opening moment for both sides.

I'm quite perplexed by people going places alone, I can't' do that. I'm quickly bored when I go to places alone lol... Unless I'm bringing my camera, yeah in that case I'm not only going alone, I'm explicitly telling people to not go with me 😂

While I'm a fairly open book, it's the number of people who are surprised to find out I have Tourette syndrome. I have motor and vocal tics that basically happen constantly, and, while I stopped pretty heavily around people in order to function, they're still very obvious to me. Somehow, until people find out about my disorder, usually from asking why I'm using a mobility aid, people manage to explain away my tics in their brain 🤷‍♂️

I am from the New York City metropolitan area.
Since I no longer live there, I don't really use my native accent. Also, most people have prejudices about people who come from New York City and I do not act or speak according to their stereotype image of a New Yorker.

That I'm half Mexican but don't know how to speak Spanish. It irritates me! I'll tell them that my dad is 3/4 German but doesn't speak it! I have a friend that is half Irish, so I asked him why he doesn't speak with an Irish accent lol

My friends are surprised that I have lived in Los Angeles for 37 years and haven't been convicted of any crimes. I can build a house from the ground up. I can rebuild an engine or an entire car. And i can cook like a fuckkn chef. That's what surprised my friends about me.

The only freinds i have are the ones who were here with mt from the beginning. they pretty much know eveything there is to know and if they did find out something new it would not be a surprise.

They call it psychic abilities but I call it a gift from God because I'd see and know everything ahead of time parties, events, relationships, pregnancies, sickness, deaths, plots, and plans and more. I would tell them and they'd see it happen or verify it happened and tell me I was right. They'd be surprised I knew already or was right about what I prophesied. They also were surprised I got so many college degrees.
