Not a mini skirt fan honestly, I don't think they do the woman's body any good - flattery wise.
The ones I do wear are typically fabric and curve hugging. I totally understand the length thing, to each their own preference. Underwear? For form fitting fabric skirts, a thong... just because of the pantie line situation. For jean skirts, I think that Cheekys or a thong would be fine. Not that much a pantie line concern there.

Yea, I normally wear a thong under my mini skirts, it feels the best, that or lacy booty short type panties, I think some women are skittish about wearing a thong under a mini because of the potential for possible exposure.
