Because leather almost always comes from cow, as in cow hide, and since we already *eat* beef then it would just be wasteful to not also use the hide for purposeful stuff.

With fur however, it is usually from animals such as mink that there is no practical reason to kill or hunt, other than for their fur, so it's merely cosmetic. There is no *need* behind their deaths, as with cows, because people have to eat after all. I think that's the difference that most people see.

There are some folks out there though who support PETA's message and/or are vegan, who don't see a difference at all and think they're both bad, which is fair enough I guess.

Probably because animals that has several purposes like leather, wool and food do usually get treated way better than what fur animals do in addition to serve more than only one purpose. When you're first going to kill an animal for food, you can use their leather too so lesser gets wasted. In addition fur animals often are wild animals that gets trapped and sometimes they gets skinned alive. Cows and other farm animals aren't as wild, are more used to spend their time on farms since they're raised there and they gets a more painless slaughtering.

Yes, they're in many places. In my country they're treated better than fur animals. I'm not saying that everything is perfect. The farms can absolutely improve. But they still gets better treatment if we compare these two. They gets more space, better food, goes outside often, often gets a form of sleeping gas before the slaughter and don't get skinned alive. The slaughter waits to cut in them after they've been shot and died.

No, they really don’t. Factory farming is still huge, across the globe because the demand is high for cheap, quick produce instead of ethically sustainable farming that gives the animal a suitable quality of life, and slaughter practises vary *hugely* from place to place both for cost effective and cultural aspects. Ethical farming and mass animal slaughter needs far more regulation and actual repercussion before it can be said they are treated better.

I agree with those opinions about divisions of meat/skin and fur animals...
But also think how many items and things are made from skin (accessories, all sorts of clothes, bags, shoes, car seats, furniture, etc...)
and how little of fur (the percentage of)...
It's the business and the lobby of investors/factories owners creating the trends and our 'needs' ... too.

To me with Leather the whole cow has been used then where as with fur they just use the fur and toss the carcass, and it's not done in a humane way either, not saying cows are treated humanely. I'm a meat loving use to wear leather until my cats kept destroying them. Only jackets they'd go after my leather and suede go figure...

Just a note for the people responding, leather does not just come from cows. All manner of creatures donate their hides for leather.

I’ve often wondered this myself but fur doesn’t bother me if someone else wears it. I don’t like it but that’s just a subjective fashion choice for me. Totally cool with leather tho.

Loads of people wear fux fur and it is considered fashionable. Real fur doesn't come from an animal that we'd slaughter to eat like leather. Fur is from animals that are hunted for fur, it can come from endangered animals, which promotes hunting, species have become extinct being hunted for there fur.

Although some fur is ethically sourced, most of it isn't. People want snake skin, tigers fur, fox fur, species have become extinct because of the unethical fur trade. Leather has more purpose as well, it is hard wearing for workers shoes.

So is leather - not all leather comes from cows or is ethically sourced yet people don’t scrutinise it to the level they do fur, which is also useful in some climates

Neither is ethical, no one vegetarian or vegan, or is ethical owns either. I'm just saying that leather is the better of the two evils as it serves a purpose unlike fur. In the western world fur is only for astetics and people is fashion wear fux fur all the time, I can easily walk into a shop and buy a fux fur coat or a fux leather jacket. People do wear fur all the time, look at ugg boots, or jumpers, furry coat inserts.

Probably bc you don't see many people wearing furs anymore. At least not in the US.

I just watched a show about someone getting a fecal transplant (swallowing frozen poo pills) to restore their gut bacteria and cure C. diff. Guy donating get $40/log of poo. When does THAT become socially acceptable?

In my own honest opinion I think it is not acceptable to kill an animal to use the fur only.
Cows for instance, are for humans, meat, milk, and leather.
Taking into consideration the part of humans who are not vegans nor vegetarians.
Sheep also are a good source of protein and wool.
    The fur is usually "Poaching".
Would you like people killing Lions, tigers and other threatened species?
In Africa, they are killing elephants for the Ivory for instance, and it is not acceptable.
Cows and sheep will always be available, while Giraffes, Elephants, Tigers, Pandas, Lions, etc.. are threatened.
Frankly, I have nothing against people wearing "Fake" fur or leather. It looks sexy and beautiful especially on a woman.

Animals farmed for food are typically subjected to much stricter regulations to comply with food safety rules.
But the fur trade doesn't care what kind of state fur animals are in as long as the fur isn't damaged.

So things like diseases, starvation, and missing limbs probably don't faze fur traders too much.

Fur comes from adorable creatures of which people cannot stand the thought of them being killed just for there fur.
Plus leather is also a by-product if the meat industry in the same way the meat industry is a by-product of the dairy industry. So with leather animals are not just bred an killed for there skin while with fur they are.

It maybe unethical to wear either, depending on your belief system. But regulations regarding the killing of livestock (ie: cattle, pigs, chicken, goats, sheep, ducks etc:) are “humanely” conducted...

Whereas the clubbing to death of baby seals and other “wildlife” is patently uncontrolled, not regulated and in humane.

Leather is a by-product of the use of livestock processed for food. A lot of other products such as bones and offal are boiled, cooked and fats extracted for use in soap and cosmetic products.

Generally speaking leather is already associated with a culture of antiestablishment individualism. Meaning the likelihood of the guy in the leather jacket even acknowledging your animal rights complaints is low. Furs simply aren’t as culturally defined. Neither is truly “socially acceptable” it’s just that furs are an easier target and far more likely to be debated.

Because the animal rights lobby has been successful at demonizing fur in some countries. In my life in Canada fur was fine then it wasn’t and then every woman in Canada who wasn’t a vegan decided she needed a fur trimmed down parka.

I think that the reason is some animals fur come from are cute. And there is the food aspect. It’s not that it’s more ethical because we are eating them. It’s that most non vegetarians aren’t willing to stop eating cows so can’t be angry about leather.

Cows aren't being explicitly hunted for leather, there is plenty of it to go around thanks to delicious, delicious cheeseburgers. Fur on the other hand is mostly the reason the animals are hunted in the first place, and MANY times the rest of the body is just discarded.

Hi, I'm a bit late to the discussion but I wanted to see if you had anymore information on this topic? I am doing a dissertation on Fur vs Leather for university with my fashion course and I wanted to see if you had anymore of a detailed opinion considering using fur and leather when it comes to ethics and also sustainability. Do you think it would be better to use real fur and leather compared to synthetics that are made up of plastic? A real fur or leather jacket will biodegrade within 3-5 years but synthetic alternatives will stay on the planet for an estimated of 500+ years. Any opinions or views would be much appreciated, thank you!

Well, look at the people who wear fur, mostly older rich females, an easy target.
Now look at those that wear leather, young males, often times in large groups like Hell's Angels, not an easy target, in fact, if you said anything about them wearing leather, you might not be alive by time the encounter ends.

I think it's because wearing fur is associated with wealthy status and the fact they are willing to torture, kill and skin animals that the rest of us consider rare and exotic just so they can look "fashionable". I guess it's also because cows are used as a food source, which means we try to utilize all parts of the animal, including the skin.

I'm not sure but I think it's because it's more cruel to get fur than leather. Some stole the fur of the animals without killing it and just let him to suffer.
While when the take the leather the animals is already dead.

I said "Some" which mean sometime they stole the fur of an animals without even killing it but in a lot of time yes they do kill them.
Also taking the leather of a cow is another things than taking the fur of a fox.
A cow is killed for her meat and then we use her skin to make leather. A fox is only killed for his fur, we don't eat fox.

The common argument is that fur comes from rather rare animals while leather is often a byproduct from meat production.

I'm not a peta person and my logic is flawed. But I think animals should only be killed for food. In that case of fur, it doesn't sit too well with me, neither does leather, I try to buy fake leather.

But I think there's a HUGE difference between eating a farmed cow and killing the last known golden bunny to make a hand bag. Endangered animals should most definitely be left alone, I don't think species should end just for some products, that isn't an sustainable byisness model either.

Or just like stick with the animal carcass its up to you plus leather and fur are one in the same its still animal skin I think people should wear what they personally like and everyone else should mind their own

When we kill animals such as Minks for their fur, we just throw away the rest of the carcass. However, when we kill cows for leather, we do use the other parts such as food

Cow's are killed for their meat all the time so using their skin for more applications is deemed acceptable whereas the animals that get killed for fur... are just killed for fur.

I don think it's an issue so long as its faux fur or leather.

However, I do remember there was an issue with certain retailers last year where real fur was passed off as fake and people were unknowingly buying it.

In the case of minks, foxes, and chinchillas, they are killed ONLY for fur. With cows we get meat, bones for broth, and leather, but chinchillas and the others they kill, and dump the skinless body.
YES IN MOST INDUSTRIES THERE WASTE, and I'm sure some products I enjoy have enormous waste and what not, o guess it makes makes me a hipocrite.

You have EVERY right to wear fur, but personally I don't like it because I don't like that the animals die just for their skin. I really like foxes, bunnies and chinchillas. I wouldn't judge a person too hard for wearing fur, unless it was over the top and mean spirited. Like a fox jacket with the tail in the back and fox heads on the shoulder, that's just fucked.

But from what I see , faux fur isn't that bad is it?

@Armourdillo minks are also used holistically, their fat is rendered for oil and the rest is used for animal feed or fertiliser.

Oh okay. I mean yeah there tons of things I dont know and I'm sure my opinion can change as I learn about them. But I guess it's the human in me that has double standards and just isn't that into fur.

What's your opinion on shark fin soup? The sharks they kill for the fins, they actually dump back into the ocean and ultimately they die because they can swim correctly or they bleed out. Even though animals are killed every day for meat, I still find this fucked up. It's hypocritical, but that's the human in me too.

fur and leather often wear in cold weather but fur is expensive and not suitable for rain while leather is better, cheaper and fit for rain and cold weather as long as it's common in use so it's more socially acceptable

I'd would guess it's because leather mostly comes from cows which are killed mainly for their meat.

A lot of fur on the other hand if from animals that aren't eaten e. g. Foxes, minx, etc etc

Go for it then. I mean those products are illegal. Buy it if it makes. you happy.

I'm a firm believer of expercing how things are made because it makes me appreciate them more. For instance, I'm a meat eater, I don't think it's wrong, so I took part on killing a chicken, plucking the feathers, cleaning it and what not. It's really tough and made me really sad, but it made me appreciate the meat that I eat and horrifies me of food waste.

I have a similar attitude to animal products in clothing, I don't weather related leather or fur because and I won't until I skin and animal and prepare the skin as material.

That being said, I personally don't like the look of furs, but leather can be pretty cool.

OH LOL, I made a typo, illegal was supposed to be legal, sorry about that.

And yea, is you sound you time worrkying about illogical arguments humans make, you're not gonna have fun. And when I say "you" I should specify that I don't mean you personally. I mean anyone reading it who may want to wear fur.

I'm not fishing to argue, I was just giving my opinion. If the animal isn't endangered and you want it's fur ("you" as in whoever wants it's fur not you personally) go ahead and skin the little fucker. But if it's an endangered animal, wouldn't agree we should leave either alone? I don't think we should kill a species for bags or jackets.
