I repeat, malay is not equal to malayalam. And indian malaysian isn't equal to malay malaysian. Indian and malay are two entirely different races. It's like Asian American and African American. Same nationality, different race and origin. Malay is a south east Asian race that is australoid. Indian is a south Asian race with caucasiod features. Completely different. Also there's no such thing as indian malayan.

Not a huge fan 🙈 My favorite patterns on you are #2 and #5 though. In general, I think most of those patterns/colors are a bit too soft and dull for you and you would look better in more intense colors, that's why I liked #2 and #5 the most! I also think they would look better if their shape was more flattering like an A-line maxi dress. It was just my opinion. What's the most important is whether you like them and feel good 👍🏻
I'm split down the middle. It's a very lovely style, the patterns are pretty. But it also looks really formal, like you would not see somebody on the street in a dress like that but rather at an event. Is there a more casual style?
This is the casual style. If there is more casual styles, I would say its "baju kurung" (national dress in malaysia) but even baju kurung seems exclusive. May seem normal for us malaysians to be wearing baju kurung but i don't think so in western cities haha..

All right I'm going to show off my ignorance, is there a big cultural reason for it to be so concealing? Why not have it cut off at the angle or the calf? I think that could be a business opportunity, translating the Malaysian style to fit an American audience, a few minor tweaks and you can slowly but surely expand your culture to fit into their sphere as well as your own.
Although some people might call that a bastardization of the culture, or a sellout. But hey no man is an island

Oh we have another type of traditional dresses which is "kebaya". Kebaya in Malaysia are mostly concealing. Malay people have cultural and tradition values to be very modest and "humble" in and out, but elegant at the same time. Unlike the japanese where kimonos can be found in modern world with cuts and edges which show much skin, malay people still retain tradition values on clothing. Our traditional clothings aren't to be fit into "western narrative". Meanwhile, foreigners are allowed to express cultural appreciation by wearing our dresses. A few alterations are allowed, but don't make it immodest. We aren't as westernised as other Asian countries, hence, there are values that are uncommon between us when it comes to clothing. I think that the traditional style of kebaya is unique enough.
Kebayas in indonesia aren't as concealing as in malaysia, but tend to look modest. Depends on the type.
There are many types of kebaya in malaysia and indonesia. In Malaysia, kebaya nyonya is "body-fitting".
Malaysia share more common values with indonesia. Indonesia too, has kebaya.
I think we have cut off at calf. But the pics i took are coincidentally below calf level. But only to that extend of alteration.
But I do agree with you that there is a business oppurtinity, yes, but look at the alterations first. As long as it still retains its modesty.
Malay traditional dresses' trademark and identity is "modest" and "humble". If these two are missing from the clothes, then it doesn't have the charm of a malay traditional dress. It will just look like any other dress.
I love them so exotic different and interesting the best part is while they donβt hide your figure it doesnβt show a ton of skin so itβs a modest form of dressing
Yeah that's the purpose of southeast Asian traditional dresses, to look as feminine and modest as possible while staying elegant. Hehe Asian styles π
Second of all, these are not indian traditional dresses. These are malay traditional dresses. From malaysia. A country in southeast asia, not South asia like india.
Third of all, anyone can wear malay traditional dresses as long as they are not making fun of it or make it immodest.
