What do bikinis cost more than women's jeans?

A random sampling of bikinis and women's jeans on Amazon shows that bikinis and women's jeans, on average, each cost about about the same US$30. A Google search also shows that some bikinis cost around US$50, with some as high as US$500. The most expensive jeans I found (ignoring any gemstones) was US$100.

Why is that? There is a lot less material in a bikini than in jeans, and about the same amount of sewing in each.

Note: This question is prompted by a discussion I had the other day with a female friend, who was preparing for a vacation trip to warmer climates.

Bikinis cost more than jeans due purely to demand. The science of pricing has become a heavily researched topic that has yielded huge profits for most of the retail world. As bikinis are manufactured by the millions every year and they all get bought up at the suggested price, then the price will go up until a significant drop in sales occurs. The prices are high because customers are willing to pay it!

Depends where you get it from, you can get a perfectly good bikini for under $20 but the catch is it will probably only be flattering on someone who has a small chest. If you want support or something that will last more than one season you have to pay more.

My guess is because consumers purchase less bikinis than jeans which means the costs to manufacture bikinis are higher, relatively speaking.

Of course, the costs are passed along to the consumers.

Because pink tax, products designed for females are typically higher priced than the male equivalent..
