Obviously all men of all ethnicity would wear such disgusting sandals but I have only seen white men wear it so far.

For a couple of reasons:
1. Many birkenstocks could be worn either home or out of the house. They can be worn as shoes to go somewhere but also as shoes for housework.
2. They are more comfortable than most flip-flops.
3. They are made of good material. I have mine now for five years and they don´t look worn at all.
