How would you define barefooting?

I know what barefooting is but to what degree its considerated as real barefooting?
For example, a lot of my friends go barefoot a lot at home of course but also in some streets when they know it's safe. But they wear shoes in most of public places like malls.

I always interpreted it as having no footwear whatsoever. I also never understood how people can do it on most surfaces. I figure their feet have to be really tough. I end up hopping around when I step on sharp rocks and things like that.

No shoes, no socks. BARE, doesn't matter where, if you don't have anything on = Barefoot.
