Why do people think dark skin automatically makes you African?

I’m Haitian/ Dominican. All my life I’ve had black people say “ How do you get your hair like that” I have no idea what they mean. I’m guessing my hair textures. Waves maybe, that’s the first thing black barbers notice when I get haircuts. They say weird things like do I put anything in my hair. 😆

I mean obviously I got African in me but I don’t think dark Indians or some dark complexion people from other countries are African at all.
