It’s a lot easier to call people ugly online because you can hide your name, age, address and the way you look and don’t have to worry about being physically attacked either.

That’s why I ask what would you do if it happened offline.

It not brave to call people ugly online either but it takes less courage to call people ugly online than offline in my opinion.

No need to tell them the truth so directly if not absolutely necessary.

I guess I'd try to spare his feelings, if the guy just came up to you out of the blue and he didn't do anything to offend you.

You could say something unenthusiastic like, "You're ok". Or maybe just shrug your shoulders. Often body language can be just as expressive as talking.
