What am I doing wrong with my curly/kinky hair?

Do my hair has gotten long and when it was shorter I used to curl it which it surprises me how ignorant people are I’m not perming or Jerry curling my hair black hair is already curly that’s why it clumps together. Anyway since my hair has gotten longer anytime I attempt to curl my hair it just comes out looking like a big messy disaster. If I use to little product it gets no curl definition of I use to much it looks like a mess. I try to use an even amount and same result just looks like a mess what’s the deal? I put some pictures below of recent attempts when my hair is wet and once it sets up when it’s wet you see some girls but once it sets it looks horrendous,

"Nice Head"... Even i know that they make relaxers for your hair. They are chemical treatments that straighten your hair or take some of the thickness, curliness, or kink out of your hair. Any hair product store will have those. This is my first thought.

My second thought would be to take you to my Dad's old school barbershop that he goes too. Everyone comes out looking like marine... I would definitely have an African-American elder gentleman do your hair given he is familiar with it personally.

You’re going to have to take your hair to a professional barber. Pay the $40. Trust me. It will be worth it.
