I think Ghostface (Scream) was still popular when I was growing up. My sister and my cousin were Ghostface for 3 years in a row. š¤£

I feel like when I was little there was less creativity, but maybe thatās me only being surrounded by other little kids, and our pop culture references were fewer to work with. Like youād still see a lot of kids with eye holes cut in a sheet like āIām a ghost, BOO!ā, or other classic scary characters like Dracula or a mummy. Iām not totally sure what kidsā costumes are, but I remember a lot of them were a cheap plastic mask that covered the front of your face, accompanied by an even cheaper plastic smock/apron kind of thing with the corresponding characterās body drawn on it. I remember being Garfield the car one year with one of those kind of costumes, and they come in all kinds of different types: DC comics characters, Looney Tunes, He-Man, GI Joe, The Transformers, My Little Pony, The Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Brite, etc. The scariest ones were the big slasher movie villains of that era: Michael Myers, Freddie Krueger, and Jason Voorhees.
I feel like I donāt remember a ton of clever costumes by adults, and in fact, I think it was deemed a little more childish for a grown-up to do it unless they were going to a Halloween party. I think that older generation was less in tune with their inner child, haha. Maybe Iām remembering it wrong, but I feel like I see a lot of adults dressing up with their kids for trick or treating, and when I was a kid, my parents were just in street clothes, same for the adults giving out the candy at houses.
My best costume was definitely when I was Indiana Jones, probably like 3rd grade. I went to Halloween party at some place where they had a costume contest, I should have won it, and they gave it to this other kid who dressed up as Pee-Wee Herman, way less clever and way more store-bought, all the kid did was cut his hair a little shorter to resemble Pee-Weeās, in a store-bought Pee-Wee tuxedo. My mom curated mine by hand, even made me a whip to carry. Hands-down the best costume. Iām still mad 35 years later😂😂😂
Just to addā¦. for pop culture stuff, when I did see adults dress up, it was a lot of the big stars of the time: Madonna, Michael Jackson, or President Reagan was a fairly common mask to see.
Scream (ghostface), the colorful skulls, bloody clown mask or bloody mask, Jason Voorhees, Freddie krueger, Micheal Myers, Grim Reaper, Apes, Animals, M&M's costume, power puff girls, spiderman, superman, batman, robin, joker was pretty much it when I rmbr the school I went to in first grade allowed costumes at school.
Witches because of Halloweentown. I used to love those movies. Too bad Disney doesn't play them anymore. The only place I think to watch them is on Disney.
Disney plus
I was a princess, a ballerina, a fairy, a witch, a genie, an eskimo and I don't know what else
Oh yea i was one of those poodle skirt girls too

Definitely the usual ones from slasher flicks like freddie, michael myers, jason, leatherface.
there's the generic ones too like vampires, ghosts and frankenstein monsters.
I also recall a lot of pirates and ninjas growing up.
From cartoons there was a lot of x-men, batman, and disney princesses too.
Witches, princesses, clowns, knights, action figures
Superman, Batman, Hobo, Ghost, Frankenstein;s monster,
Devil's, Satan, Ghostface, Vampires, Various Masked Monsters, Clowns, and I guess chicks probably prefer angels, female satan helpers, princesses or girly girl outfits, playboy bunnies, etc
yea the Scream masks were so popular, especially those with a pump that lets fake blood pour over it. Spider-man was second place
When I was a kid, Batman and the Lone Ranger.
Can't do the old bedsheet with eyeholes ghost costume anymore or they'll think you're in the Klan.
