Say you were at a shoes-on event and would be the only one going barefoot, but your heels are worn down to the metal nail. My friend invited me to her brother's house this weekend and I wore my favorite pair of heels that went with my outfit and were relatively comfortable, but they were worn down and dented the wood floor. I did not want to take off my heels as everyone had their shoes on.

There's no problem being the only without shoes on. I love going barefoot and I don't care what other do. But if you don't want to be barefoot in general you should tell your host

I kept my heels on and tried putting most of my weight on my toes at first, but stopped doing so after my feet started hurting.

i would definitely take them off and ask for borrow slippers. i would need to know if floors were tiled or rug etc.
