Westerners are even more obsessed with it and even call fair-skinned Indians dark. At least Indians are not that strict about it and Mediterranean skin tones are not considered “dark”

I don't think fair skin is that big of a beauty standard here as it is in India, and skin bleaching isn't very common. I mean, it may be important to some but it's definitely not as important as having a healthy weight or being well groomed. I'd say being fit is the biggest standard in America.

Also trends are always changing here, a decade ago being tan was considered more attractive.

Why are westerners being drawn into it. Its called colorism where dark skinned indians find themselves discriminated against. It's a big thing all over Asia where dark skinned people are seen and treated as an inferior class because they are generally more likely to be rural lower class field workers.
