Girls, Do I have to by makeup colors based on whether I am a cool or warm tone?

I have been makeup based on my skin tone. I was told that I was a cool tone a few years ago, and bought colors to accommodate this. I was told by a couple of makeup artists that this rule is not really followed strictly anymore. Is this rule going like so many others. You know we can wear white any time these days, etc.
