What are your top five cold weather clothing parts?

How would you rank your (up to) top five go-to "It's cold outside, what do I wear?" clothing parts?
Something specific you never go without?

Obviously a kind of jacket and boots, that's why it's not a top three because everyone is probably naming those.
Some people always wear gloves, others rely on their warm pockets from their jacket. Some are fine without a scarf, and others think it's essential.

There are also differences in the goal. Do you need to focus on wind, wetness, or both where you live, and how does that affect your choices?

I am still thinking about it myself, but I would definitely include my scarf, boots, coat, and fleece-lined tights. Last is surely the first, and the scarf is second. I vary my tops too much to go for one kind of top, maybe a cardigan, but then there are options too. With the lined thighs, you can't go wrong with any skirt or trouser.

Depends how cold it is and what I'm doing. A 7 mile run, skiing, shoveling snow, and running from the car to a wine bar all require different clothing. But in general here's what I have on tap to deal with cold weather.

• Underwear - synthetic and breathable to wick moisture away from my skin.
• Socks - Extremities are a special problem in extreme cold. So I have wool socks in 3 different weights to choose from.
• Base Layer - A full body top and bottom of thin thermal clothing. I have base layers in 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0. The 3.0 is almost like a neoprene wetsuit.
• Mid Layer - A wool or cashmere sweater for warmth even if you end up sweaty.
• Outer Layer - A waterproof windproof layer that still allows breathing to let perspiration escape. A hard shell Gore-Tex membrane or softshell jacket and pants.
• Footwear - Either waterproof trail running shoes or hiking boots with a Gore-Tex type membrane to keep your feet dry and a rubber (Vibram) heavily lugged sole for traction.'
• Accessories - Various weight gloves, hats, beanies, balaclavas, neck gators, scarfs, and eye protection from sunglasses to goggles.

I have a down jacket for very cold days. mostly I wear a fleece lined hoodie for most of the winter. On cold days i have a blanket lined denim jacket I put over the hoodie.

i have a pair of insulated hiking boots and a pair of insulated work boots. I have a trooper hat that a bunny rabbit gave his hide to keep my ears warm. I have a few different pairs of gloves.

It's all about layering. I like something breathable next to my skin, followed by a warm jumper. Absolutely essential is a fleece one piece jump suit because it locks everything in and prevents draughts. Lastly good waterproof coat (with hood) and trousers.

It doesn't actually get that cold here, it rarely dips below freezing. But it's high humidity and very windy so feels far far worse than it actually is.

Thermal fleece-lined leggings, boots, a pullover hoodie, a zipped-up hoodie, gloves, ear warmer, glasses, and a COVID mask help. Believe it or not, the mask makes a difference.

In cold weather, you should keep 3 body parts warm: head, hands and feet. Those are primordial. If it's raining or snowing, waterproof or water-repelent trousers and jacket.

I stopped wearing winter clothing when I moved to Australia. Never had any need for it here.

A padded jacket with a sweater and a shirt AND t-shirt underneath. If it's really cold I'd add a cap, scarf and if it's icy gloves. Boots if there's snow on the ground. If it's cold with a strong wind I might opt for a leather jacket.
