Have any of you girls ever worn a hoopskirt before?

Looking at old timey picture partly because I am procrastinating on work and because I like how women dressed back then, so the question popped into my head.

Lightweight hoop skirts, usually with nylon hoops, are worn today under very full-skirted wedding gowns. They can sometimes be seen in the Gothic fashion scene. Reproduction hoop skirts are an essential part of living history costuming, including American Civil War reenactment.

I don't think they're very feasible these days. There's no point in wearing them. You don't see men going around in tux's all the time, so why should the girls wear those kinds of dresses/skirts

I have worn a hoop skirt, but it was awkward. Like wearing a cage around my waist and legs almost. But it was quite pretty. I like that the fashion for full dress/skirt support has mostly gone away from the hoops and towards a semi-stiff mesh crinoline. That's what you'll see under most gowns (like prom or wedding dresses) instead of hoops.

When I when to prom a lot of girls wore tight dresses that did not even have that.

There are different styles of prom dresses, I think a lot of people now like the long mermaid or trumpet style gowns, or even knee length or cocktail dresses (if their school allows it). But there are still options for a fuller, more billowing gown and those generally have the crinolines underneath. But they're not as popular.

Yeah, that is too bad. I think the girls look even more elegant in those as opposed to the those other styles.

I also think they look good. I always liked the Victorian style dresses as well, minus the corsets though. You know, the way the women dressed with boobs practically spilling out but if they dared to show their ankles they were sluts, lol.

I'm getting back into this whole dress thing because I am looking for a wedding dress, but there are so many styles out there that it's hard to choose.

Yes I have. I bought one but also had a ballgown type on black satin dress in that style. I love how they look on. So girly and feminine. I would wear one more often if given the reason LOL

I put on the hoop skirt and a flowy skirt over top. It wasn't a full on dress.

No, I was only standing. It feels really neat on, but I think sitting would be what makes it really uncomfortable. I can't imagine trying to sit in one of those things

Like you feel like a princess. Its really flowy, and all you wanna do it twirl with it on

No, not hard at all. It was probably a meter in diameter. Not sure how big or small they generally are but I think it was designed for a youth or petite woman. I was like 14 when I tried it on.

Last question I can think of. Was it a pain to put on?

The one I tried on wasn't. It was basically a lace skirt with rods of bamboo built in. The circular rods gradually got bigger the further down it went. Basically I just had to step in the middle, then lift it up and tie it on. Then I put the skirt over my head and let it fall over top the lace hoop skirt.

No problem! It was about 5 years ago, but things like that stick in your mind when you are a young girl. I think my mom still has it in her house somewhere.

I have no idea, but I imagine they can't hold very much weight. I think the hoops are pretty light otherwise the dress would weight a lot.
