Most likely he is trying to flirt with you. Although if you are often depressed, he may also just want see you happy rather than sad. Guys don't generally go around just complementing a girls looks for no reason, because even innocent remarks like, "I like your dress" can really upset a lot of women.

He likes your smile. If he also flirts in other ways or compliments other things, then he likes you.
