What are you meant to do when a guy rests his hand on your thigh?

Ok so i'm extremely clueless when it comes to dating/flirting (or anything in that field), and i've noticed that when you're in that awkward little first date phase, guys often tend to rest their hand on your thigh for some reason. But like what is this actually supposed to achieve? is there an appropriate response or do we both jus ignore it and continue chatting or what?

TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH. If i was a woman and a guy rests his hands on my thighs I would tell him to move it or I'll break the fuck in thing. there is no need for it. It kind of depends on how he’s acting when he does that. If he’s casual about it then I usually put my hand on top of his hand and we just continue talking. If he’s giving me “the look” then it usually means he wants to kiss.
