Takes like this make me not want to ask such things with guys at all. I have asked men about their relationship status in conversation whether we were in a friend setting or not. I always thought it casual normal topic. I’ve asked a man if he has plans with someone for the holidays or whatever mainly because it’s such a normal area of conversation in western society with women. I don't know maybe a lot of us are still programmed to ask about those things but maybe I will refrain going forward if this is what it makes the man think.

No. Not really. It's just a casual question. Not everything we say is an invitation for being approached.

Now that being said, that doesn't mean you can't take your shot if you are interested, but don't be let down if she declines your request and then blame her for appearing to be receptive by asking you that.
