Have you tried mead?

When a lot of people think of mead it conjures up images of medieval monks or fur-clad warriors chugging from a bulls horn. But there's several brands available in shops.

Mead of course is made from fermenting honey water and is one which is why the words for honey and mead are related across over 50 languages.

While it's not hard to find mead on supermarket shelves or off licences (I've seen it in a few butchers too) I'm not familiar with anyone who actually drinks it.

I first tasted it at a Medieval banquet on a trip to Ireland when I was 30. OMG, it was like tasting sunshine! I had never seen it in America so I brought a bottle back with me. Then I learned that the reason I had never seen it before was because I had never heard of it so had never looked.

I've tasted it several times since, including on another vacation to Ireland, that time with my wife, when I was 56. I really like it but wouldn't want to get drunk on it. I'll bet it could give you a real hangover.

I live in a rural area with a lot of wineries. There is one just five miles away that also makes mead.

Every year I make wine with the grapes growing in my garden, and some years, instead of adding sugar to increase the alcohol volume, I just add honey. The result is not bad at all. It has definitely a clear taste of mead. The yeast can't transform the complicated forms of sugar present in honey, the taste remains a little sweet after normal sugars have been transformed into alcohol.

There's a local meadery and I enjoy meads. Some are better than others. I don't drink it regularly only due to cost and general health.

The only place I've ever seen or heard of it was at Renaissance fairs here. I've never tried it.

Made my own, about 10 or 11 years ago when I was a teenager and why steal from your parents when you can make your own

It's sweet almost syrupy and tastes like Pedro Ximenez at this point in an old Glenfiddich bottle topped with a shaved champagne cork

Yes, I have tried mead. Let me just say that it had an unusual flavour. I bought a bottle of mead at a shop in Copenhagen while on holiday a few years ago. I also know someone whose family name is Mead, which is a common English surname.

I drink it on occasion, but I prefer stronger stuff, more bang for your buck. Back in the Viking Age they didn't really have distillation in Europe so wine and hard cider was about as strong as alcohol got.

I love it. I hate beer, but mead is wonderful. Especially with a roast turkey leg by the fire

I'm not sure now, I think i have and i think i thought it was rank but now I don't know anymore so i will have to try it again to be sure that it is as disgusting as it sounds.

I think I tried it once but can't remember. Meade is one of the oldest, if not the oldest alcoholic beverage in history. I need to try it again. Maybe I should just make 5 gallons tonight.

Yeah it's just a very basic fermented honey wine. It can he very sweet, or sometimes it can be strong just like wine. It was considered an aphrodisiac by the Vikings and that's actually where the term honeymoon comes from.

Mead is and excellent drink. I plan to make some of my own one day. Its not uncommon where I am but still tricky to find in quantity. There's only two placed I know of that make it in my state otherwise I order it from a craftsman out of Vermont

Had a small bottle from the Isle of Bute, I think that is how it is spelled, a bit sweet for me, wife liked it, it was clear. Had some dark meadcan not remember from the name also from Scotland, more to my liking
