Do you like sodabreads?

Today I got the bakestone out and tried an old recipe for a simple soda bread. It was just a pound of flour, half pint of buttermilk and a half teaspoon of baking soda then flatten out and whack on a hot bakestone top of the hob.
I found it to more pleasing than the normal Irish sodabreads and a lot faster to make.

But do you like sodabreads

I've tried a bunch of recipes since I'm generally impatient about proofing and raising dough with yeast. Yet I've not tried a recipe yet that I really love. It's always just okay to me and I miss the flavor and smell of yeast and the associated texture.

Mostly I've been seeking a quick and dirty way to make pizza dough without having to spend a whole day or longer waiting for yeast to function as a leavening agent. A lot of them combine things like buttermilk or yogurt into the recipe and they're some of the better ones I've tried, but I still miss the effects of yeast.

This kind of bread seems like a variant of pancakes. I never use soda to make bread, and pancakes can be made without anyway. In case of bread I always use real yeast, and sometimes also for pancakes. I wonder what the taste would be of your sodabread, with the same recipe, but made with real yeast instead of soda. Soda is a harmless chemical, but doesn't contain anything valuable in terms of nutrition, while yeast contains a lot of vitamins. Just saying ;0)

It's alright. Kinda dry. But good with butter and jam.

But when it’s done cooking, you have to dump Pepsi soda on it to give it the flavor then you have your true soda bread 👍

people do put a slice of bread in a bowl and pour water tea or bovril on it so I wouldn't be surprised if people use pepsi

I think they're better with soups and stews. I don't like them dry or by themselves usually.

My former boss's wife used to make it. It was the first time I had it. It was very good.
