Perhaps dill pickles? I am unfamiliar with all the varieties but I mainly prefer the ones that are quite savory and sour and not very sweet at all.

Unfortunately not so popular in Japan as will dill pickles in general. Most of the varieties popular here are sweet Gherkins and Cornichons. I never cared for the sweet types.

I like the bread & butter pickles the best. I've only had dill pickles, bread & butter pickles, and fried pickles.

Dill, also gerkins are just smaller dill pickles. I don't like the bread and butter ones, and I dunno what cornichons are.
