Should food on a plate touch, or must each item keep its own space?

I'm of the mindset that food should be visibly separate on a plate but some over lapping of dry items is acceptable. There are obviously exceptions such as bangers and mash or rice and curry, but the general rule is butt up against but don't overlap. Eggs should never touch beans, in fact beans.

Thoughts
Food can be piled on top of each other
Food can over lap considerably
Food can just touch
Food needs space
There needs to be a physical barrier
Sod it, stick in a sandwich
