We learned it from the media, don't you think? We see the same gosh darn poses in magazines, so we're bound to recreate them when we take selfies. I think it's because it just makes the body look better, curvier.
Some scholars will even argue that the pose is sending a subliminal message to the audience. The message is that women are weak, frail, and unsteady (i. e., bending one leg throws off balance). I'm not even kidding. There's an entire documentary the analyzes why women pose the way they do. It's called "Miss Representation."
