From personal experience, I've done this at times. Sometimes I'm self conscious that my panties will show if I have to bend down. I think thicker females preferably do this for the same reason I feel too exposed just wearing undergarments with dresses/skirts unless it's skin tight then that's different. I believe it's also because I'm not used to wearing them to begin with and prefer shorts/jeans/leggings.

It's also a little bit warmer and it makes you feel more confident I think. I can't tell, because I don't wear skirts and dresses. Only pants, shorts and maxi-dresses.

Yes, because I am known for flashing my underwear by accident. If I wear shorts I don't have to worry about the wind or how I sit down. When I was younger I didn't, and mostly now don't wear short skirts so not as much of a problem. But when I do wear something shorter always don the shorts!
