Why are women so "catty" to each other?

As a dude, you don't notice this behavior in real life, but its quite prominent behavior online. I honestly did not know how "catty" girls can be to one other. Why?

Looks behind me (I know you ain't talking to me)... i'm never like that and have no reason to be, honestly i think some girls are on a competition thing, if only they knew how to feel secure in who they are there would be no need to compete or be catty with other girls but sadly some of us girls are trying to out do the next girl in looks, clothes, Male attention such hard work, when being oneself is so much easier and not in competition with anyone but myself.

Some women are catty while some guys act like dogs. I don't know why, I guess it's just how it is. Most of my friends are females, but they aren't the catty type so even when I come across these kinds of girls it throws me off.

Most women feel compelled to automatically compare themselves to each other in almost all aspects of life.

When THEY feel that THEY dont measure up, the claws come out and the rumours start to circulate.

I've noticed it too. That's actually one of the main reasons I like to have guy friends more. They don't cause as much drama. I really think it's mostly about the competition for a guys attention. One girl is always trying to topple another girl, or put her down to make herself look good. It's really stupid, but that's just something I've noticed.
