Girls, why do you feel the need to tan so much?!

Okay, so I'm in high school, and just about every girl wants to be super tanned. For me this isn't even a turn on at all! I mean a slight tan might look good, but really I couldn't care less. And when girls are tanned to much, major turn off for me. So to the other guys reading , am I the only one who thinks like this? Or do other guys think the the as me and also don't really like tans.

I'm unusually pale (and people comment on it alllll the time, ugh) and I have grown to like it. I try to keep pale, because tans don't look good on me and they put you at a higher chance for skin cancer and wrinkles. I like the way I look pale, I think it kind of sets me apart. Although, for the summer, I think I will get a little bit of color, just because being completely pale is usually rather unflattering when you wear bathing suits and shorts and stuff, a little bit of a tan makes people look more toned.

I personally hate the look of really deep, fake tans, on girls and guys. It looks really unnatural and vaguely creepy to me, and it is gross to see people as young as in their 20s with leathery skin. And some people who fake tan look like they got attacked by orange sharpies. A light tan looks good on most people though, I just don't like getting tan myself.

it seems like in western societies everyone wants to be tan, and in asian and india everyone wants to be white and pale. I watched this documentary about how women in asia bleach their skin to be whiter, and all the indian models are white. it's crazy.

i'm from australia and I know other countries stereotype us as tanned blondes on the beach. but if you think about cate blanchett, rose byrne and nicole kidman, who are all australian, and they're very fair skinned. I am very fair as well despite having naturally dark hair, and I will never ever tan. it's stupid and gives you skin cancer, and it looks really fake I think.

I agree. Tans are okay if they're naturally. I mean, you're not going to spend your entire summer inside so that you don't get a tan, but girls who spend time in tanning beds or laying out in the sun all the time just to get a tan.. well, it's unhealthy and it doesn't look good.

It's funny how girls think that some things make them look pretty when it actually makes them uglier, I blame the media.

Skin tone doesn't matter so long as it's authentic, you don't see black girls covering themselves with white stuff, it seems they have more self respect than that.

No matter how good the tan is, It's obvious when it's fake, people don't get tanned in the middle of winter and do girls ever consider that lots of guys like pale girls?

I'm afraid that this is a delusion that we are unlikely to defeat, maybe us guys should start getting outrageous fake tans and see how they feel about it.

To me it all depends on her style and whatever her natural skin tone was before meaning that if it looks really unnatural then its a turnoff. And I also wan to say that if you're really going to go through all that then do it all the way. I think one of the BIGGEST turnoffs is when a girl is naturally pale or light skinned, she gets a super dark tan but has super white tan lines. I honestly don't care what your skin color is, pale  or tan, but super obvious tan lines are horrible in my opinion.

You said it yourself...a slight tan looks good. Maybe a bit of a golden complexion...just enough so the girl doesn't look like she's a vampire (although with all the Twilight hysteria, I guess that look is kinda in these days)...

I think it's more of a social image thing...it says, "Hey, I like to go out in the sun and have fun."

One thing that girls with very faire skin do have to worry about though is the long-term skin damage that tanning can cause. It's not worth getting a tan if it's going to at some point ruin your skin!

In particular, people who get freckles, need to be very careful about exposure to the sun...for both their health and appearance. The "winter princess" look is preferable to being tanned with lots of freckles.

It looks horrendous in the winter, but if it's done in moderation during the other seasons, I think it can look good on the right girls. The ones who go overboard and then on top of that wear the light pink layer upon layer lip gloss and whatnot just look super trashy.

I'll get tan in the summer because I'll be outside and everything but I'd rather be "less attractive" during my 20's because I don't tan than be a wrinkled basketball from age 30 on.

Some people think it's wrong that Michael Jackson went from being black to white, yet they're out there trying to go from white to tan so it doesn't even make sense! I just wish that people will someday realize that they're skin color is just fine the way it is and that they don't need to be orange to be attractive.

I'm right with you man. As long as it's not excessive I don't really care, but when a girl walks around with a tan that is a 100% change from her actual skin color it's a turnoff. This goes back to the way girls are- they try too hard with a lot of sh*t... makeup, clothing, etc etc.

Well I only like Italian women and dark haired women with tan. I hate other women with tans. To me its not a turnoff. I see tons of women in Staten Island and New Jersey with tans and they actually look hot with tans. Tanning doesn't look on every woman though and I wish they knew that. Its a shame that women like Ashley Tisdale get a tan because she looks better without one.

My personal opinion on the matter is this:

The reason tans have always been thought of as sexy is because a naturally "sun-kissed" look tan is a visual cue that the girl lives a healthy and active lifestyle. This made it attractive. But now that all it means is that a girl lays out for hours in the sun or in a tanning bed, it's just disgusting. Tan used to mean "healthy" and then it was cool. Now it means "skin cancer" and it isn't.

Other girls complain about me not getting any tan or so. I get a headache if I stay in the sun for too long and my eyes can't stand the light so I'm not really in to tanning. But I don't care.

I prefer having a pale skin over a tanned skin + headache + ugly skin when I get older.

I love shades of pale. I don't see why any white girl would destroy their naturally lovely skin to be tan. I never have nor will. If she's naturally tanned or gets a slight natural tan from the sun, then that's fine. But many women over-do it.
Most of the world likes pale skin anyways.

I personally can not stand being really pale. I get pale in the winter so I go to the tanning bed for 12 min a week to get a 'glow'. But before prom I went crazy :p In the summer though I get really dark. It makes me feel more comfortable in my own skin.

there is a fine line between tanned skin and "Doritos" skin ! a lot of girls seem to forget that !

being tan just makes a lot of girls feel more comfortable about themselves. in my opinion, it also makes me feel skinnier cause I'm darker. now I do think that the girls that are tan in the winter look stupid because well it's winter and no one else is tan in the winter. I do admit though that I lay out all the time in the summer. I guess I'm a hypocrite.
