What do you say when you ask a woman "How far along are you"? And it turns out she's not pregnant?

I always wait for a woman to say she's pregnant so I don't make this mistake. But some have made this mistake before. How do you get out of it?

I asked a woman that right after she gave birth. I used to work in the same part of the hospital where the maternity ward was. Most of the time it was safe. I generally asked who was pregnant because it's sometimes hard to tell. Therefore if it's nobody in the elevator, it's not offensive.

Well yours is really relevant situation. And I get what you're saying. But we both know weight is usually a trigger for most women. So I can understand how most would take it as an insult. Even if it were just an honest mistake.

Well you can't get out of this one. The only thing u can do is damage control.
First, say you are genuinely sorry and you meant no disrespect. Then, soften the blow by making ur mistake relatable like: "I am overly attentive to things like these because i am trying to get pregnant with my wife/ because my sister just told me about her pregnancy!"
Now at least she won't dislike you that much...

I’ve accidentally said “congratulations” to not pregnant women a few times. When they said that they weren’t pregnant, I just simply said “oh, I’m sorry…” and backed off. They didn’t appear too offended by it, but those all happened many years ago and people seem way more sensitive nowadays.
