My friend's stepmotherhood experience?

A friend's second husband left her with another woman. She was left alone with her stepson. But she does not like her step-son. Her stepson do all the chores at home so that she would not be sent him to the orphanage. My friend says that is only way she can tolerate him and she says it is just 'mercy'. Do you think it is 'mercy' or 'batten on somebody'

Definitely sucks to be that kid! But, well, there are worse things in life than doing chores. I do chores pretty much all day.
