Why would a girl try place her hand close to your hand instead of touching it?

How often is this?

I know a few girls that had placed their hands close to me (nothing's in our way), some of them by "distracting me" while others went directly. All of them had shown signs of playing with their hair, looking at you from a distance, bitten their lips while looking at me, had broken the touch barrier on their own, initiated conversation (by themselves), etc.
