What does it mean when a girl holds your hand?

For a few months my best friend of 3 years has been holding my hand. I notice she does it when she feels uncomfortable or really excited/happy.
It's not just the simple closed hand sort of hold, she threads her fingers through mine and sometimes squeezes my hand. Sometimes she squeezes it hard just to be playful.

But what I want to know is; why has she recently started doing this?
