Let's say you compliment a woman by calling her beautiful. She thanks you for the compliment and says, "I like attention" and smiles sweetly.

It depends on her age and her life experience. There's a healthy period where admiration builds self-esteem and confidence in young girls/women. But most women actually appreciate compliments about non-physical things much more, particularly in the early stages of dating.

There's also nothing wrong with enjoying attention, if she has been starved of it growing up. What's more important is seeing whether she grows out of that need or not.

I wouldn't be too judgmental immediately, but I would want to find out if she was a bit of a narcissist.

I'd think she enjoys compliments from anyone so I ain't that special, I might think that she said it in a flirty way because she liked the compliment so I'd compliment her more, but probably the first one..
